Welcome to Davy Steele.com

Davy Steele is one of Scotland’s best loved singers and songwriters. His interpretations of traditional Scottish songs and his own compositions have become classics, reflecting his sensitivity to the human situation. He was also renowned for his charismatic and ebullient nature. Davy could always be relied upon to ‘get the party started’.

Although still in its early stages, we hope this website will provide a resource about Davy Steele’s life and work with information from family, friends, and colleagues. We hope that his remarkable spirit will live on through this site, and the interpretation of his songs by other singers.

Originally from Summerlee, by Prestonpans on the banks of the River Forth, near Edinburgh, he remained a proud ‘Panner’ all his days. Davy was well known for his earlier work with Drinker’s Drouth and Ceolbeg. He co-founded three bands, Urbn Ri, Caledon and Clan Alba. Joining The Battlefield Band in the 1990s allowed his talents to be fully shared with the wider world.
Davy is fondly remembered by all who knew him. Many have paid tribute by commemorating tunes, albums and even dances to him. In 2011, the tenth anniversary year of his death, his second wife, Patsy Seddon, began a wide-ranging project to celebrate Davy’s life and music, including a concert for Celtic Connections 2011 and a CD for Greentrax. Both are entitled Steele The Show and involve many of Davy’s favourite singers and musicians.
